WEEKLY PICKS – SEPTEMBER 12, 2016

Another week brings another round of releases and we’ve narrowed down the best of the best.

We’ve selected our recommendations for best new media dropping this week. Here’s a rundown of what deserves your time and dollars:

MOVIE PICK – CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

Image result for captain america civil war

This was simply a foregone conclusion. Civil War is arguably the best Marvel movie yet. It has all the spectacle you’d expect, but with a surprising level of intimacy. It’s Avenger vs. Avenger when the team is split in two, one side loyal to Captain America (Chris Evans) and the other to Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.). The movie is bursting at the seams with heroes, but makes enough time for new additions Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and Spider-Man (Tom Holland) to shine. Civil War is the closest thing to a comic come to life. It’s available on Blu-Ray and DVD September 14.

TV PICK – LUTHER SERIES 4

This month sees the fourth season of Idris Elba’s BBC crime drama come to Netflix. Elba stars as the titular Luther, a brilliant homicide detective with some fierce inner demons. His methods are sometimes questionable as he stretches every bit of the law to solve his cases. Season 4 follows Luther as he’s dragged back to his old life in London while on the trail of a cannibalistic serial killer. Elba continues to deliver the top-notch performance that has made the show a hit. This is the prefect opportunity to binge through the customarily short seasons and catch up. Luther is available on Netflix September 17.

COMIC PICK – DOOM PATROL #1

Former My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way has made quite a name for himself in the world of comics. His first title Umbrella Academy drew critical praise and now Way brings his off-beat sensibility to DC’s equally off-beat super team Doom Patrol. The new ongoing title promises to deliver trippy, youth-skewed weirdness as the first title in DC’s new Young Animal line aimed at younger readers. Just don’t expect any YA melodrama. Way has proven he can write with youthful zeal, but also explore mature themes and brilliant character development. Nick Derington’s gorgeous, kinetic pencils handle the art chores. Doom Patrol #1 stocks September 14.
